Overview
This intensive one-day expert workshop will help delegates better understand how UK vaccination policy is developed, regulated, and implemented in the United Kingdom. The focus will be on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) around which the entire UK vaccines ecosystem pivots. The JCVI is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, national immunisation technical advisory groups in the world. It has been a safe and reliable custodian of the UK vaccine programme for as long as it has existed, with very few missteps, by way of under- or over-reacting.
Yet for those less familiar, the JCVI can be hard to understand in terms of what it is, and why it is the way it is (its history and legacy), where it sits and how it operates in the wider vaccine policy-setting framework, and what the limits of its jurisdiction and power actually are. It is also a committee arguably not renowned for ease of access or the most open style of communication. In short, it has a distinctive ‘persona’ and place in the UK vaccines ecosystem.
This workshop will examine all the above in a concentrated one-day format: the full pathway from vaccine development and regulatory approval through to policy adoption and population rollout, centred on the JCVI itself. Participants will engage with the scientific, economic, regulatory, and political dimensions of vaccine decision-making, drawing on real-world principle-based* case studies from COVID-19 and business-as-usual operating. The course is designed to be useful to pharmaceutical and vaccine industry professionals (market access, commercial, marketing, HEOR and medical affairs), especially those at earlier career stages or new entrants to the vaccines space, for whom it would be an advantage to upskill as fast as possible.
The workshop will be based on a small number of participants**, in a safe space to explore a detailed understanding of this environment, and taught by two experienced professionals who together have seen and experienced almost all aspects of the UK vaccine policy space.
